چکیده

Introduction Biodegradable stents have the potential to avoid long-term complications of conventional stents such as in-stent restenosis and late stent thrombosis, and could allow for a restoration of vasomotion and vessel growth which makes them suitable for e.g. paediatric applications [1]. To investigate the mechanics of this new type of stent via finite element simulations, we developed a numerical framework based on continuum damage mechanics, that is able to incorporate the stent’s complex time-varying material properties. As a proof of concept, we set up a virtual bench test to compare the mechanical behavior of a biocorrodible magnesium stent and a bioresorbable polymeric polylactic acid (PLA) stent.

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor from Embryonic Status to Cardiovascular Pathology

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a multifunctional cytokine with distinct functions in angiogenesis, lymphangiogenesis, vascular permeability, and hematopoiesis. VEGF is a highly conserved, disulfide-bonded dimeric glycoprotein of 34 to 45 kDa produced by several cell types including fibroblasts, neutrophils, endothelial cells, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells, particularly T ...

B I O E N G I N E E R I N G Computational Modeling of Arterial Biomechanics

The arteries deliver blood from the heart to tissues, while the veins return blood to the heart. Although we sometimes think of arteries and veins as simple tubes, in reality they are much more complex: they curve and branch, which profoundly influences blood flow and biomechanical forces within the arterial wall. The artery wall is composed of several types of cells that interact with each oth...

Thoracic and abdominal aortas stiffen through unique extracellular matrix changes in intrauterine growth restricted fetal sheep.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a fetal complication of pregnancy epidemiologically linked to cardiovascular disease in the newborn later in life. However, the mechanism is poorly understood with very little research on the vascular structure and function during development in healthy and IUGR neonates. Previously, we found vascular remodeling and increased stiffness in the carotid an...

The role of microRNAs in cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular disease has become the main factor of death and birth defects in the world. There are some therapeutic structures and drugs for curative and palliative therapy of the disease, but to the aim of accessing reliable therapy or to postpone onset of disease, especially for individuals with heritable coronary artery disease in their pedigree Genetic engineering technologies are making...
